Finding A New Gear

In 5-6 weeks my life is going to change. My wife and I are expecting Baby #1 on Dec 17th (#StarWarsBaby #TheForceIsStrongInMyFamily). We are in new territory. We are excited/terrified and just about every other emotion possible.

A year or two back a smart person told me that my wife and I should have children. Like any person with children tells you that you should have children. I told him we weren’t ready yet, we are focused on making careers for ourselves — me in tech/startups and my wife in corporate social work/disability. We just didn’t have the time to do it properly.

He responded that you’ll never do it if that’s the thought process. You’ll always be busy but if you have children you’ll find a new gear. You will be forced to change — your priorities will be forced to change. When you have one hour to get things done, you won’t waste a moment. This didn’t change my mind at the time but it definitely stayed with me.

Now that the time is upon us I think he made a really good point. Even now, before the baby arrives, I’ve become more like White Rose (from Mr. Robot) — not wasting a minute. We will see what happens after the baby is born but here’s to finding a new gear.
